We’re about 25 minutes from tipoff of the Marion-Carroll Class 3A first-round boys’ basketball state tournament game. Looking across the way, I see four Carroll students in the stands dressed as the four members of Kiss. Gene’s got a gut, so they are pretty accurate portayals.

Anyway, here are the starting lineups:

  • Matt Barnd (1.5 PPG)
  • Kasey Semler (9.7 PPG)
  • Amry Shelby (24.1 PPG)
  • Levi Lynott (9.0 PPG)
  • Drew Clark (4.3 PPG)

  • Casey Kasperbauer (16.1 PPG)
  • Blake Haluska (12.4 PPG)
  • Logan Lehrkamp (4.7 PPG)
  • Austin Brower (11.2 PPG)
  • Thomas Steffen (5.3 PPG)

We’ll continue updating as the game progresses.

Two minutes in, and it’s Marion 2-0 on a Shelby inside hoop

5:15 left in 1st: Carroll leads 3-2 on a Brower 3.

4:46: Still 3-2 Carroll. All of the Tigers’ shots thus far have been jumpers.

4:32: Haluska 2 FTS, and it’s 5-2 Carroll. Yes, he looks like his two older brothers.

3:30: Steffen layup on Kasperbauer feedmakes it 7-2.

3:30: Semler hits big 3 for Marion to cut lead to 7-5.

2:23: Semler hits corner 3 to put Marion on top, 8-7. But Brower comes right back with a trey to put Carroll back ahead, 10-8.

1:06: Clark offensive rebound ties it at 10-10, but Kasperbauer hits 3 on ensuing possession for a 13-10 Carroll lead. 6 of Carroll’s 9 shots thus far have come from distance.

Shelby hits jumper at buzzer. End of first quarter: Carroll 13, Marion 12. Marion has the edge on the boards, 10-5. Carroll hit 44 percent from the field to Marion’s 35. Once again, Carroll looks like strictly a perimeter team at this point.

6:35 (of 2nd): Shelby hits a short fadeaway to put Marion back on top, 13-12.

5:25: Shelby hits a driving shot. Amazing how he can get shots off in traffic despite being 5-foot-10.

4:55: Reserve Jordan Holdsworth hits an NBA-distance trey, then an inside shot off an inbounds. Kasparbauer then hits a shot in transition. It’s Carroll 20-16.

3:32: Hunter Sade comes off the bench for a big offensive tip-in for Marion. Then Corey Kramer hits a pair of free throws, and we’re tied again, 20-20.

2:42: Once again, it’s Shelby penetration. He gets fouled and makes two FTs to put Marion up, 22-20. Shelby has 10 points.

1:00: Barnd makes a layup after a Carroll turnover, and it’s a 24-20 Marion lead, the Indians’ biggest. Timeout Carroll.

:30: Holdsworth scores on a putback. He’s been big off the bench for Carroll with seven points and three rebounds.

That’s the half. It’s Marion, 24-22. The Indians lead despite shooting a timid 33.3 percent from the field (9 of 27) to Carroll’s 42.1 (19). 11 of Carroll’s 19 first-half shots have come from3-point land. Marion holds a decisive 18-11 rebound edge, which has helped offset its cold shooting.

Shelby’s his usual self with a game-high 10 points. Teams that shoot as many treys as Carroll has so far usually don’t win at the state tournament. We’ll see if that holds true again.

7:00 (of 3rd): Barnd hits a driving layup as the second half opens. Marion’s up, 26-22.

6:32: Haluska free throw for Carroll makes it 26-23 Marion.

4:50: Carroll has rallied behind, what else, the 3-pointer. Lehrkamp and Brower have hit treys to give Carroll a 29-26 edge. Timeout Marion.

3:00: Combs hit a corner 3 to tie the game for Marion at 29-29. That’s when Haluska took over. A Lehrkamp 3 for Carroll was offset by a Shelby free-throw line jumper, but Haluska hit an and-one, followed by another inside hoop to make it 37-31 Carroll with 1:52 left in the 3rd. Another timeout for Marion.

1:00: Another Haluska post hoop makes it a 39-31 Carroll edge. The Tigers crowd is chanting “You can’t stop him!” Right now, that’s true.

Brower hits a 3 just before quarter’s end. It’s 42-31 Carroll headed to the fourth. Marion needs a big-time rally – and some good shooting. The Indians are hitting 29 percent from the field. Shelby was limited to two points that quarter.

7:20: Haluska with a layup courtesy of a Kasperbauer penetrate and dish makes it 44-31 Carroll to start the 4th.

6:18: It’s 46-37 Tigers after another Haluska inside hoop that was sandwiched by a Shelby jumper and Combs corner 3.

5:45: Kasperbauer hits a pair of free throws for a 48-37 Carroll lead. Averaging 16.1 coming in, the freshman has been held to 7 so far. Yet his team is comfortably ahead.

4:36: A little life for the Indians! Semler hits a 3, then Shelby scores on a driving layup after a turnover. It’s 48-42 Carroll. Timeout Tigers.

4:04: Uncle Mo’s on the side of Marion. Carroll misses a wide-open layup, then Combs makes two free throws after an offensive rebound. It’s 48-44.

2:44: Haluska rattles home two free throws. It’s 50-44 Carroll.

2:25: Shelby hits a driving layup and is fouled but misses the free throw. It’s Haluska’s fifth foul. He finishes with 16 points. It’s 50-46 Carroll.

1:16: Lehrkamp makes 1 of 2 FTs for Carroll. Shelby comes right back with a backdoor layup. It’s 51-48 Carroll. Timeout. Hold on for this finish!

1:12: Lehrkamp makes 1 of 2 free throws. It’s 52-48 Carroll.

:57.1: Shelby drives right down the court for a layup to make it 52-50. Kasperbauer immediately fouled and makes 1 of 2, 53-50. Carroll gets the rebound but throws it OB. Marion ball.

:34.6: Shelby misses a FT-line jumper, but Combs gets the o-reb. and is fouled. He makes both shots. 53-52.

:30.4: Lehrkamp is fouled and clutches up with 2 free throws. It’s 55-52 Carroll.

:15.8: Shelby penetrates the line and gets fouled, hitting the floor hard. He is down on the play with what appears to be a cramp in his left calf. Timeout on the floor. He has to leave the game with Dusty Albaugh coming in cold to shoot the FTs. He makes 1 of 2. 55-53 Carroll.

:13.8: Brower fouled on the rebound. Clanks first one hard off the back rim but gets a fortuitous bounce. Misses the second with a Marion rebound. Timeout with 12.3 left. Carroll’s up, 56-53.

:4.0: Marion forego’s the chance to tie, with Shelby hitting a layup. It’s 56-55 Carroll. Timeout. Shelby’s got 25 points. He’s one heck of a player.

Marion forces the turnover on the inbounds play. Semler tries a 3-pointer from the side but it’s an airball, perhaps partially deflected.

Carroll wins, 56-55.  Terrific game. Crappy way to end your first state tournament appearance in 57 years.
