USHL hands out Lincoln punishment

Just caught word that the USHL has dished out punishment to four Lincoln Stars players for their roles in last weekend’s ugly line brawl against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Jon Puskar of the Stars missed last night’s game against Tri-City for being the instigator in the brawl. Puskar basically jumped Riders winger Cody Murphy at the drop of the puck on a faceoff.

Jim Siers missed last night’s game and tonight’s (Saturday’s) for being involved in two separate fights. Garrett Peterson was handed a three-game suspension for being third man in. Mike Sdao was suspended for two games: one for fighting after the original Murphy-Puskar scrap and one for showboating to the crowd with a wave of his arms after cutting RoughRiders defenseman Matt Leaverton with a punch.

Apparently Peterson and Sdao have been placed on “probation” for their actions. Goalie Kevin Murdock, who was not suspended despite playing a minor role in a couple of scraps, also is on a league probation, of sorts.

Lincoln was fined $500 for players not reporting to the team bench during a fight. Lincoln Coach Jimmy McGroarty told the Lincoln Journal-Star that his team would not appeal any of the suspensions or fines.

Interestingly, the RoughRiders were issued no suspensions. Leaverton missed last Sunday’s game against Sioux City for receiving a game misconduct against Lincoln, which is an automatic one-game suspension.

Defenseman Matt Tennyson, who was originally given a game misconduct, had the penalty reduced to a game ejection and will not be suspended.

So do you think the USHL-imposed discipline was sufficient?
