Iowa: The worst football state in the country?

Here’s a little something to get you folks riled up. CBS Sportsline is doing a series of stories on the 10 worst football states in the country.

You guessed it, Iowa is one of those 10. Sportsline’s reasoning is that Iowa has yet to produce an NFL Hall of Famer, though Kurt Warner is an odds-on choice to make it to Canton one day.

Here’s a link to Sportsline’s story on Iowa. Keep in mind that a lot of this is done tongue in cheek (I think):

Wow, this article portrays Iowans as a bunch of drunken, sex-crazed hicks who just got telephone service. This man has obviously never been to an Iowa football game (notice I didn’t say Iowa State). The notion that we are a horrible football state based on the fact that the state hasn’t produced a single (homegrown) NFL Hall of Famer is just lazy reporting. This guy needs to get off his chair and do some real reporting and not get all his facts from Wikipedia.

Dude didn’t mention Aaron Kampman. Robert Gallery is only a bust because draft nerds call him one from mid-April through mini-camp. He’s one of the top guards in the AFC. I think Iowa is representing itself nicely right now in the NFL. The first Heisman Trophy winner is from Dubuque.

I think high school football in Iowa has grown leaps and bounds even since my days. I was passed off as an interior-type player (LB and TE). These days in the Cedar Rapids metro, at 6-0, 210 pounds (solid 4.7 40), I might’ve made it as a safety. Might’ve.

Iowa produces high character kids with excellent work ethic. Yeah, that leans toward linemen, but there are more and more skill kids (Wegher, Davis, Cotton).

And just watch the recruiting of A.J. Derby (Tebow Jr.) and James Morris (faster A.J. Hawk). It’s going to be a who’s who of national types.

Yeah, this story misses. I’m not surprised. CBS Sportsline is worthless shi$. It’s the dustbowl of the big websites. Dennis Dodd (who is damned solid) and . . . ???? That’s what I thought. After UNI was dumped from the NCAA tournament in McDermott’s last year, I asked, after they were eliminated by Georgetown at Dayton, him what the future held. He left for Iowa State maybe a month later. Some CBS guy called the question inappropriate but necessary and had no problem using the answer.

But I digress. Good post, JJ. Kurt Warner will be a Hall of Famer.

More Iowa bashing by someone who has no idea what he’s talking about.
